THE MINE COAST AΤ LIMENARIA
Metallia (=mines)
Year 2003 was the centennial anniversary of the mines of Limenaria; it was a hundred years ago when a German company called Spindel, of significant manpower, set up its premises for mining and processing the iron ores of the area.
The "Mine Coast" used to be a place where the loaded wagons emptied into the furnaces their content, which was consequently processed and shipped to Germany.
Early in the twentieth century, Limenaria experienced such a thriving economy that they were duly characterized as "California of Greece". This was the time when "Palataki" (= little palace) was built, along with all necessary facilities surrounding it.
Today the Mine Coast, with those century-old buildings still standing prominently, resembles an industrial era museum. This, formerly a centre of extensive mining works, is currently an ideal setting for carefree holidays and rest.
In this photograph you can see the headquarters of the German company, which is still reserved.
