Limenas
Thassos or Limenas is the capital of the island. It is located in the Northeast and is linked by boat to Kavala and Keramoti, and the Scala Prinos, northwest of the island.
We propose you to visit and see:
• Thassos of today is a live testimony of the ancient city. Starting the tour from the north, the visitor can admire the walls, which have a length of around 4 km
• The Roman theater, built in a prominent position, after the destruction of the ancient one in the 6th century AD, when the orchestra was transformed into the arena. In the same place at the present are played ancient dramas, under the aegis of Thassos Festival.
• The Acropolis seems detached from the wall and the theater and it is estimated that it belongs in medieval times. At the south of the wall are the ruins of the sanctuary of Panas, with representations of the god, two male goats and a satyr.
• The Donor monument located just below the theater. Sculptures and architectural parts are kept in the Museum.
• The Temple of Poseidon, very near to the sea, which naturally was especially worshiped. Now, are saved the facade and on the west side, the altar of Hera.
• In the center of the ancient town, the Conservatory and the Market (Agora) are dominated. The first building is probably of the 2nd AD century, while the ruins of some ancient building, edifice. The market consists of the Propylaea, located opposite the Museum, the ancient and Roman galleries and the five platforms. From these findings archaeologists conclude that the market was religious, cultural, commercial and intellectual center of the era.
• The arch of Karakallos, with the corresponding votive inscription.
• The Temple of Hercules, which has its only entrance on the west side.
• The gates of Seilinos and Hercules, to the east outskirts of the ancient city, in the valley of the Bear. Heracles, in his own gate, height 7 meters, is shown as a bowman.
• The Gate of Zeus, with the personal representation of the god.
• The museum, in the ancient city, where unique finds are exposed, among them the head of Dionysus and one krioforos kouros (statue of a young man).
